Master your mascara –
5 common mistakes
when applying mascara

No matter how stressful the morning may be, one thing always works: brushing your teeth and applying mascara. I'm quite sure if I asked ten of my friends what makeup they never leave the house without—we bet you—at least seven of them would answer: mascara!

Even women who barely wear makeup on a daily basis and prefer a natural look are reluctant to skip their daily dose of mascara in their morning routine. It's no wonder: Once the small, fine hairs around the eyes are mascaraed, the entire face immediately appears fresher and the look much more awake. Mascara is essentially your morning coffee.

There are some common mistakes that stand in the way of mascara-covered, full, and extra-long dream lashes. Even the best mascara can't guarantee a perfect look if applied incorrectly. Here are the 5 most common mascara mistakes—and tips on how to avoid them.
Already a mascara master? Okay, then start right away with our bestselling mascara WINT!

NO. 1 – BE PREPARED: PREPARATION MATTERS

The panda look is especially noticeable when you still have creams or liquid makeup on your face. These creamy or even slightly oily textures prevent the mascara from adhering properly.

1. Anti-Panda Tip:
Apply a little concealer , nude eyeshadow, or simply a little powder to your eyelids. This way, your beautifully long lashes won't rub off on your eyelids or brow bones. Our ILGE Translucent Compact Powder also works as a perfect primer —not only is it the perfect photo finish for your face, but it's also a perfect primer for mattifying your makeup beforehand.

2. Anti-Panda Tip:
After applying, look down for a few seconds and let the mascara dry. This way, nothing can go wrong.

NO. 2 – WRONGLY USE THE EYELASH CURLER

Unfortunately, this is a mistake that happens again and again: people tend to reach for the eyelash curler after applying mascara to get the hairs into the right shape. You've seen the professionals do this trick and want to copy it? Not every professional move is suitable for your daily make-up routine at home! This also applies to shaping your lashes after applying mascara. You should definitely avoid this trick for your everyday make-up. Because if you use the eyelash curler on lashes that have already been mascaraed, your beautiful, long lashes could break. We definitely don't want that. The reason: because the color pigments have already dried, the fine lashes are no longer as flexible and break like dried blades of grass. Ouch. Stop, stop!

Our tip, which is guaranteed not to be a nuisance: ALWAYS use the eyelash curler BEFORE applying mascara ! For experienced users: You can briefly hold the eyelash curler under the hairdryer. This acts like a heat roller for your hair—for the ultimate look.

But be careful, only do it for a very short time – the curlers should only get warm, not too hot – that would damage the lashes and possibly burn the skin. If you try this trick, test the warmth of the curlers on your hand before placing them on your eye. Another trick is to gently push up your mascaraed lashes with your fingertips after applying mascara and wait a moment until the mascara has dried.

No. 3 – The Mascara Do's and Don'ts

Okay—now we need to get serious. Because there are three things you should keep in mind when using your mascara.

Overcome your separation pain:

Is your mascara more than four to six months old? Then throw it in the trash. You should definitely get rid of it, because no mascara lasts much longer than six months. Incidentally, this doesn't include conventional mascara with synthetic ingredients. Mascara, in particular, comes into contact with the body's own microorganisms that live on our eyelids and in our faces. If we use mascara for too long, it can become a breeding ground for bacteria and cause itching, styes, or even conjunctivitis. Our very serious advice for mascara that's too old: throw it away!

Sharing is not always caring:

Are you at a bar with your girlfriend and you want to quickly freshen up your makeup? Who hasn't been there? On a girls' night out, it's quite common to borrow your best friend's mascara. But this can quickly mix your own microorganisms with theirs, and bacteria can settle and then, unfortunately, be passed on – pretty unhygienic. So our sharing is caring tip: This is perfectly fine(!) with clothes, accessories, and the latest gossip. Not with mascara.

About pumping and clumping:

Do you push the eyelash brush into the tube a few times before applying to pick up as much color as possible? You should definitely stop doing this. The up-and-down motion mainly pumps air and, in the worst case, bacteria into the mascara. This causes the mascara to dry out much faster and also becomes unhygienic. Drying out can also cause small clumps to form.

Our anti-pumping and clumping tip: Insert the eyelash brush, briefly twist it in one direction, and then pull it out again. Has your mascara already dried out a bit from all the pumping? Then you can try saving it with some facial oil. Simply add 1-2 drops of your oil to the mascara. This will make the paste smoother and easier to apply. If the end of your brush is a bit clumpy, wipe the brush with a tissue before use.

NO. 4 – NOW LET'S GET A COLOR OF INK: APPLYING IT

You might think applying mascara to your eyelashes is a science in itself. But spider legs, still-blonde roots, and the like can be easily avoided. These are the most common mistakes when applying mascara.

Don't be shy – You don't get close enough:
Your lashes lack curl despite applying plenty of mascara? Could it be that you're holding the brush slightly higher than the base, or just applying a little mascara to the tips? This can make your lashes look shorter than they actually are. The closer, the better: If we only apply mascara to the lengths and tips, our lashes quickly appear shorter than they actually are. Our No. 1 fluttering tip: The closer you apply mascara to the base of your lashes, the longer and neater they'll look. Gently move the brush back and forth before moving it along the entire length of your lashes.

One-sided line – you only use the mascara horizontally:
We just gave you the tip to zigzag the mascara brush back and forth to the tips of your lashes. That's the classic method—and it's not wrong. But you can get even closer to the lash line by holding the brush vertically. Our tip for even fuller, thicker lashes: Hold the mascara in a line from bottom to top and then sweep it along your lash line in a windshield wiper motion. You'll see—there's a difference.

Tusch', don't push:
If you press too hard when applying mascara, it might end up not only on your lashes but also on your eyelid. It's a bit like the involuntary makeup effect you get when driving a car. Our "wipe it and go" tip: Simply clean it with a cotton swab while the mascara is still fresh. You've probably experienced this before.

Straight ahead – You only look straight ahead when applying ink:

Have you ever watched makeup professionals apply mascara to models' eyelashes? Models usually look up or down. We always look where we can see—straight into the mirror. But there are tricks you can use to change your perspective and make your eyelashes look even more beautiful. Our mascara trick: When applying mascara , look down if you're applying mascara to the top lashes. Look up if you're applying mascara from below. Feel free to look left and right to make sure you cover all your lashes with mascara.

One direction – you only apply your mascara from below:

If you only apply mascara from the bottom, it will never fully cover your entire lash line. Therefore, the following advice is especially for all the blondes among us. Our tip: First, top, then bottom. The mascara has a much greater effect if you coat the lashes with color pigments from both top and bottom. This way, all your light lashes will no longer have a "blonde base." Important: Apply mascara from the top first, then bottom to enhance the curl and maintain the curl.

Counting – too many ink passes?

Spider-legs or clumpy – that's the last thing our eyelashes should look like. But how many coats can we apply? The general rule for conventional mascara – be careful – is: It's best to apply two, or at most three, coats. Conventional mascara shouldn't be reapplied in the evening, unlike lipstick, for example. If you don't have time to completely remove and reapply your makeup, you should probably skip the second coat. Conventional mascara, especially waterproof mascara, produces very clumpy and unsightly results.

Things are completely different with our natural cosmetics from UND GRETEL – thanks to the natural pigments, you can apply multiple coats of WINT mascara . The color pigments work additively, meaning the coverage increases with each layer. Our tip: Wait a moment between applying layers – otherwise, you'll remove the color pigments from the first coat the second time. So, apply mascara, let it dry, and then apply again. And if you want to touch it up in the evening – no problem at all! Turn your day makeup into night makeup.

NO. 5 – GOING TO BED WITHOUT AN EVENING RITUAL: YOU CAN FORGET THAT

In the morning, mascara is as much a part of your ritual as brushing your teeth – and in the evening, it should be no different. After all, the key to long, healthy eyelashes is a daily evening routine. No matter how tired you are, removing makeup is a must. Otherwise, not only could your eyelashes be unnecessarily stressed and even break off. In the worst case, mascara residue can even cause sensitive eyes and eye infections. This is not only painful but also extremely unsightly. Therefore, you should always be particularly careful when removing makeup from the delicate eye area.

Our tip for particularly healthy and long eyelashes: The best natural serum for lengthening eyelashes is castor oil, also known as castor oil. You can easily find it at any pharmacy and apply it to your lash line in the evening after removing your makeup with a fine, clean brush. Your eyelashes will love you for it.
