1. Even results: The key factor in tanning with DHA and erythrulose is a process called the Maillard reaction, a non-enzymatic glycation reaction between DHA and the amino acids in the stratum corneum. This outermost layer of skin consists primarily of dead skin cells, which in turn are rich in keratin and various amino acids. The interaction between tanning agents and amino acids leads to the formation of brown pigments (melanoidins), which give the skin the appearance of a light, summer tan. This process is limited to the upper layers of the skin; the lower layers are unaffected due to the nature of the reaction and the structure of the epidermis. Because the sugar active ingredients generally interact more strongly with areas of the skin where there are more dead cells or rough patches, an uneven result with streaks or patchy areas can occur.
